Dentistry Q & A

What do you use X-rays for?

X-rays are a diagnostic tool that help your dentist get a more in-depth look at the structures and condition of your mouth. An X-ray can help your dentist to:

  • Determine the extent of a tooth infection
  • Map out your tooth for a root canal
  • Assess whether you need bone grafting for a dental implant
  • Diagnose abnormal lesions, like bone cancers, tumors, or cysts
  • Determine whether you have sleep apnea

Ultimately, X-rays allow Gentle Breeze Family Dentistry to give you more precise, accurate, and customized treatments, so that your smile stays as happy and healthy as possible.

What is a filling?

A filling is a treatment for cavities caused by tooth decay. When the natural bacteria in your mouth react with the carbohydrates in our foods, they produce acids that eat away at the enamel of your teeth.

If you don’t brush and floss often enough, those acids eventually form a hole in your tooth, called a cavity.

Gentle Breeze Family Dentistry treats your cavity by clearing out all of the decayed tooth material with a drill and then sealing the hole with a filling material.

The filling material hardens in the hole, restoring the strength and structure to your tooth, and preventing any further decay from seeping in.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of your gums and the leading cause of tooth loss among adults. It happens when plaque and tartar are left to sit on your teeth for too long, which irritates your gum tissue.

If your gum tissue gets irritated enough, it begins to recede away from your teeth, creating pockets between your teeth and gums.

Those pockets are highly susceptible to collecting more debris and bacteria, further irritating your gums and causing even deeper recession. This cycle continues until the structures that hold your teeth in place deteriorate entirely, and your teeth fall out.

Some of the symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Gums that bleed when brushed or flossed
  • Loose teeth
  • Chronic bad breath

Gum disease is known as a “silent killer” since many patients don’t notice its symptoms until the disease is already in its more advanced stages. Because of this, it’s incredibly important to maintain regular checkups with Gentle Breeze Family Dentistry.

Their team of experts can spot gum disease at its earliest stages, and provide treatment to get your mouth back in good shape. They even offer gum disease treatment with a soft tissue laser, giving you more effective results and a quicker healing time.
